SOCIAL CLUBS is the sophomore release for Melbourne
(via Wagga Wagga) guitar-pop group The Ocean Party.
After their debut 'The Sun Rolled Off the Hills' released
earlier this year, the band were quick to record a follow up,
making it two albums in one year. Mixed by Jack Farley
and mastered by Casey Rice the album will be released on
CD, digitally via ITunes and Bandcamp
by Sound of Melbourne Records, and on vinyl through
Birds Love Fighting.
“Looking so much like early Orange Juice, they use sweet major seventh chords and the lyrics are timeless in style and content. Delivered faultlessly. If I said they are a pop band I am not being at all dismissive or negative. Songs with hooks and charm." Dave Graney
SOCIAL CLUBS isn't sonically a far hike from their debut, but with the welcome addition of Casio-tone and three guitars featuring on tracks like 'In a knot' - the debut single which Who the Hell described as having a 90's throwback to Dinosaur jr. ‘Social Clubs’ is all together a more lush and textured listen matched against a garage pop vibe in songs like the title track (a muse on the frustration of trying to meet interesting, unpretentious people at the pub) which clocks in well under two minutes. On the other hand ‘Hot Headed’ features laconic acoustic guitar; a return to the bands lazy sun-soaked pop feel. It’s an album with a considered balance of diversity and cohesion.
